Which Mask Actually Works for Haze in Malaysia?

For haze in Malaysia, only a certified respirator gives you a filtration number you can rely on. A NIOSH approved N95, or the European EN 149:2001 FFP2, is tested to capture at least 95 percent of fine particles, and only if it seals to your face. Surgical and cloth masks are not certified for fine particles: the US CDC reports their filtration anywhere between 10 and 99 percent.

This guide is from ORGANO, the Malaysian brand behind TYGRON®, a tiger milk mushroom (Lignosus rhinocerus) functional food developed with Fungitech Sdn Bhd and formulated in Australia. We make a daily wellness drink, not masks, so nothing below is selling you one.

What does an N95 actually filter?

The number is a test result, not a brand promise. According to the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, "NIOSH Approved FFRs are a disposable respirator that achieve a minimum of 95% filtration efficiency". The particle that matters during haze is PM2.5, fine enough to travel deep into the airways, and a certified respirator is built to capture it.

The catch is that the rating describes the material, not the gap between the material and your cheekbone. CDC is blunt about this:

"Your N95 respirator must form a seal to your face to work properly. Your breath must pass through the N95 respirator and not around its edges."

Do surgical and cloth masks work against haze?

Most advice goes wrong in both directions here. Neither is useless, and neither is a haze mask. CDC groups disposable face masks and cloth masks together and reports their filtration as "Reported between 10% and 99%". The honest reading of that range is not "they fail". It is that the number is unknown, unregulated and different from box to box, so you cannot plan your family's exposure around it. On cloth specifically, CDC says: "There are no standards or regulations ... It is very difficult to know the level of filtration and protection they provide."

Surgical masks were designed to stop droplets travelling outward and hang loose at the cheeks by design. Fine for a dash to the car. Not the tool for an hour on a motorcycle in smoke, and not the plan for a household with a child or an older parent.

What about FFP2 masks, and how do I know one is genuine?

FFP2 is the European respirator class and a genuine alternative to N95. Singapore's National Environment Agency describes EN 149 as the European standard for masks designed to reduce the wearer's exposure to airborne particles, graded into FFP classes by filtering ability. A compliant one prints the CE mark, the text EN 149:2001, the class and the manufacturer's name on the mask itself.

NEA sets out the equivalent test for the American standard: a NIOSH approved respirator prints the word NIOSH, the approval type such as N95, and the manufacturer's name on its packaging. All three, not one of them, and NIOSH publishes a searchable certified equipment list. A real respirator always names the standard it was tested against. A listing that says "KN95 style" or "N95 grade" without naming a standard or a certifying body is describing a shape, not a test.

Mask type Certified against a standard? Filtration of fine particles Use it for haze?
N95 respirator Yes, NIOSH At least 95 percent, if sealed Yes. This is the one.
FFP2 respirator Yes, EN 149:2001 Tested to its class Yes, equivalent option.
Surgical mask Not for fine particles Unknown, reported 10 to 99 percent Short trips only.
Cloth mask No standards or regulations Very difficult to know Not the plan.
"N95 grade", no standard named No Not tested No. A shape, not a test.
Three mask types laid out for comparison during haze season in Malaysia: a cup-shaped respirator, a pleated surgical mask and a fabric mask
Only one of these carries a tested filtration number.

Why does fit matter more than the rating?

NEA advises consumers to perform a fit check before relying on any respirator. The standard seal check takes ten seconds: cup both hands over the mask without pressing it flat, breathe out sharply, and feel for air escaping at the nose bridge, cheeks or chin. Air at the edges means the seal has failed and the rating on the box no longer describes what you are breathing. The two usual culprits are facial hair along the sealing line and a nose clip nobody moulded. Both are free to fix.

Can children wear N95 masks during haze?

This is the question parents ask most, and the answer is uncomfortable. NEA states plainly that "there are currently no international certification standards (such as N95) for use of masks in children", because standards like NIOSH's were written for adult workers in occupational settings. An adult respirator on a small face does not seal, and a mask that does not seal does not deliver its rating.

So for children the protective move is not a better mask. It is less exposure: keep them indoors in a filtered room, cut outdoor activity when readings climb, and plan the day around the air rather than around the mask. We go through this in detail in our guide to protecting children's lungs during haze.

When should you actually put a mask on?

Malaysia's Department of Environment publishes the Air Pollutant Index on the APIMS portal, and its guidance is written by band. From 101 to 200 the DOE advises "limited outdoor activities for the high risk people", defining high risk as people with heart and lung complications. From 201 to 300 the advice widens: "old and high risk people are advised to stay indoor and reduce physical activities. People with health complications are advised to see doctor." Above 300, older and high risk people "are prohibited for outdoor activities".

As a household rule: the mask comes out once readings pass 100 and outdoor time cannot be avoided, and above 200 the goal is not to be outside at all. On 11 August 2026, Malay Mail reported 11 areas of Sarawak recording unhealthy API readings, with Serian IPD at 189 and Kuching at 166. For a run rather than an errand, see whether you can exercise outside during the haze, because exertion changes the calculation.

How long can you wear one comfortably?

A respirator makes breathing harder by design. NEA notes that N95 masks "increase the effort of breathing", which for some people may cause discomfort in breathing, tiredness or headache, and it advises regular breaks and hydration for people wearing them through a working day. NEA also notes the practical flipside: during a haze incident, even a mask that is not perfectly fitted can still be useful in filtering out pollutants. Older parents are a separate case with their own advisory thresholds, covered in why haze is worse for elderly parents.

    What a mask cannot do

A mask protects you for the minutes you are wearing it, and haze seasons are measured in weeks. The World Health Organization estimates that ambient air pollution caused 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide in 2019, with the greatest burden in the WHO South East Asia and Western Pacific regions. That is a long exposure problem, not a doorway problem. So the mask is one layer, filtered indoor air is the second, and the daily habits that carry a household through a long season are the third. Our eight week haze preparation plan sets out the order to do them in.

The habit families reach for through a long season

Communities across this region have used the sclerotium of Lignosus rhinocerus, cendawan susu harimau, for generations in everyday respiratory wellness. In my own cultivation houses it is the part we grow slowest and grade hardest, because it is the part tradition always valued.

TYGRON® carries that tradition in a single daily sachet: 1,000 mg of tiger milk mushroom sclerotium in an 8-in-1 blend that also includes elderberry, astragalus root and lion's mane. It is a daily habit, not a substitute for a mask, for filtered air, or for a doctor.

Buy the certified respirators now, set up one filtered room at home, and start the daily habit while the air is still clear. See TYGRON®, or read the eight week preparation plan first.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a surgical mask enough for haze in Malaysia?

Not for fine particles. The US CDC reports filtration for disposable face masks and cloth masks anywhere between 10 and 99 percent, with no standard behind the figure, so you cannot know what any given mask delivers. For haze exposure that matters, use a NIOSH approved N95 or an EN 149:2001 FFP2 respirator, and check the seal.

Can my child wear an N95 during haze?

Singapore's National Environment Agency states that there are currently no international certification standards, such as N95, for the use of masks in children, because those standards were developed for adults in occupational settings. An adult respirator will not seal on a small face. For children, reduce exposure instead: keep them in a filtered indoor room and cut outdoor activity when readings rise.

At what API reading should I start wearing a mask?

Malaysia's Department of Environment advises limited outdoor activities for high risk people, meaning those with heart and lung complications, once the Air Pollutant Index is between 101 and 200. As a household rule, wear a certified respirator for unavoidable outdoor time once readings pass 100, and above 200 aim to stay indoors rather than to go out wearing protection.

How do I check my N95 is genuine?

A NIOSH approved respirator prints three things on its packaging: the word NIOSH, the approval type such as N95, and the manufacturer's name. NIOSH publishes a certified equipment list you can search. A listing that says "N95 grade" or "KN95 style" without naming a standard or certifying body is describing a shape, not a test result.
