How to Prepare for Haze Season in Malaysia: 8-Week Plan
Start about eight weeks before the smoke arrives, not on the morning the sky turns orange. In practice that means four things: book your aircon service now, buy and correctly size an air purifier plus spare filters, stock properly fitted N95 respirators for every person in the house, and agree your family's haze rules while everyone is calm. Malaysia's southwest monsoon, the drier of our two monsoons, runs from late May to September, and the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre warns that the risk of transboundary haze rises as the region moves through its dry season. Every item on this list is cheaper, easier and more effective to do in clear air.
TYGRON® is a tiger milk mushroom (Lignosus rhinocerus) functional food developed by ORGANO and Fungitech Sdn Bhd in Malaysia and formulated in Australia.
When does haze season actually start in Malaysia?
There is no fixed date, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. What we have is a weather pattern. The Malaysian Meteorological Department describes two monsoon regimes: the southwest monsoon from late May to September, and the northeast monsoon from November to March. The southwest monsoon is the drier of the two for the whole country except Sabah, with most states seeing minimal monthly rainfall.
The ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre, which monitors hotspots and smoke across the region, noted in its 2026 dry season outlook that southern ASEAN enters its traditional dry season with the onset of the southwest monsoon, and that where below normal rainfall is expected, "an increase in hotspot and smoke haze activity is expected", raising the risk of transboundary haze under the prevailing winds.
So haze risk is driven by rainfall and wind, not by a month on a calendar. That is exactly why you prepare on a schedule you control. If you are reading this in August, the dry stretch is under way and this week is your deadline. Our haze season guide covers what happens once the smoke is here.
The eight week countdown: what to do and when
Spread over eight weeks, none of this is expensive or difficult. Compressed into the two days after the first bad API reading, all of it is either sold out, fully booked, or done badly.
| Time before the season | What to do | Why now and not later |
|---|---|---|
| 8 weeks | Book the aircon service. Decide which room becomes your clean room. | Technicians get booked out once the haze starts. |
| 6 weeks | Buy the air purifier, sized for that room, plus two or three spare filters. | The US EPA suggests considering a portable air cleaner as part of your preparation, before a smoke event. |
| 4 weeks | Buy N95 respirators in the right size for each person. Seal the obvious gaps. | You cannot fit test a mask you have not bought. |
| 2 weeks | Set up the clean room. Agree the family plan. Refill any regular prescriptions. | Calm decisions beat decisions made at 7am with a child coughing. |
| Ongoing | Check the API each morning. Keep the daily routine running. | A habit built in a calm week still stands in a bad one. |
What should I buy, and how many?
This is the part most families get wrong, usually by spending on the wrong things. Here is the short list.
| Item | How many | The detail that matters |
|---|---|---|
| Portable air purifier with a HEPA filter | At least one, for the room where the family sleeps or spends the most hours | Size it to the room, not the price tag. Our indoor air guide has the room size table. |
| Spare filters | Two or three per unit | The EPA advises keeping extra filters on hand, as they may need replacing more often during a smoke event. |
| N95 respirators | A supply per person, correct size | A NIOSH approved N95 achieves a minimum of 95% filtration efficiency, but only if it seals to the face. |
| Child sized respirators | Per child who will wear one | Fit is the whole game. See haze and kids. |
One honest note on masks. The US CDC is clear that N95 respirators must form a seal to the face to work properly, and equally clear that cloth and disposable face masks are not made to a filtration standard, with reported filtration ranging anywhere from 10% to 99%. What you get from one is genuinely unknown. That is not the same as saying they do nothing, but if you are buying for haze, buy the thing with a published standard. Before you spend, read the five haze myths that cost families money every season.
How do I get the house itself ready?
Service the aircon before September. In a climate this humid, servicing intervals are shorter than manuals written for temperate countries assume, and a clogged unit moves less air just when you need it moving. Our guide on how often to service your aircon in Malaysia has the intervals. While the technician is there, ask them to show you the recirculate mode.
Check the filter fit. The EPA's wording is worth copying exactly: make sure the HVAC filter is in good condition, fits snugly in the filter slot, and is replaced at the frequency recommended by the manufacturer. A filter with a gap around it is one the air walks past.
Set up a clean room. The EPA defines this as a room kept as low in smoke and other particles as possible, free of particle generating activities such as cooking or smoking, with doors and windows closed. It suggests a room big enough for the household, ideally a bedroom you can close off. Put your purifier in there.
Seal the obvious gaps. Door gaps, unused exhaust fans, window frames that never quite closed. You do not need a renovation, and should not try to make the house airtight. The checklist sits in the indoor air guide.
What should my family agree before the API climbs?
This is the free part of haze preparation, and the part almost nobody does. Five conversations, fifteen minutes total.
- Who checks the number, and where. Malaysia's Department of Environment publishes the Air Pollutant Index through its MyEQMS air quality portal. DOE's bands run Good, Moderate, Unhealthy, Very Unhealthy and Hazardous, with an Emergency band above 500. Pick one person to check it at breakfast.
- The number at which outdoor plans get cancelled. Agree it now, on the family chat. Arguing about tomorrow's football training is far easier when the threshold was set weeks earlier. Our post on exercising outdoors during haze covers where that line sits.
- The school plan. Who collects the children early if outdoor activities are called off, and what they do indoors instead.
- Who in the house is higher risk. DOE's advice singles out older people and those with heart and lung complications for extra caution. Name them out loud, because that is who the plan is really for.
- Refill regular prescriptions early. If anyone at home takes prescribed medication, restock before September rather than queueing at a busy clinic on a bad air day, and ask your doctor or pharmacist what they want you to do during a haze episode.
For the band by band actions once the reading is already high, what to do when the API hits unhealthy is the companion piece.
Why start a daily wellness routine now instead of in September?
Everything above is about exposure, and exposure is the part that matters most. A well fitted mask, a serviced aircon and a purifier in the right room do more for your family during haze than anything you can eat or drink. Nothing replaces them.
What a daily routine adds is consistency, and consistency is a habit problem. Habits started in a calm week survive a chaotic one. Habits started mid crisis rarely last past it. That is the whole argument for August rather than September.
The habit many Malaysian families reach for at this time of year is tiger milk mushroom, or cendawan susu harimau. Communities across this region have used the sclerotium of Lignosus rhinocerus for generations in everyday respiratory wellness, long before anyone measured what was in it. TYGRON® carries that tradition in a single daily sachet: 1,000 mg of tiger milk mushroom sclerotium in an 8-in-1 blend that also includes elderberry, astragalus root and lion's mane. Fungitech Sdn Bhd holds the Malaysia Book of Records certification for the highest 1,3/1,6 beta-glucan content in Malaysia. 1,3/1,6 beta-glucan is the most important active compound and quality benchmark in tiger milk mushroom, and a higher content signals greater potency and quality.
1,000 mg tiger milk mushroom sclerotium in one naturally sweet daily sachet. Whole family, ages 2 and above.

Frequently asked questions
When should I start preparing for haze season in Malaysia?
About eight weeks before the first bad readings, which in practice means early August. Malaysia's southwest monsoon runs from late May to September and is the drier of the two across most of the country, and haze risk rises through that dry stretch rather than on a fixed date. Booking an aircon service in August is easy. Doing it the week after the first orange sky is not.
How many N95 masks should I buy for my family?
Buy a supply for each person rather than one box for the household, because sizes differ. A NIOSH approved N95 achieves a minimum of 95% filtration efficiency, but only when it seals to the face, so the right size per face matters far more than the total number in the drawer. Buy early enough to check the fit on everyone.
Do I need an air purifier in every room?
No. Start with one, in the room where your family spends the most hours, usually a bedroom. The EPA's clean room approach is built on exactly this idea: one room kept as clean as possible, doors and windows closed, with the purifier in it. Add a second unit later, and size each one to its room rather than buying the biggest model on the shelf.
Should I service my aircon before the haze season?
Yes, and book it early, because technicians fill up once the first haze headlines appear. The visit is also a good moment to check that the filter fits snugly in its slot and to learn how to switch the unit to recirculate mode so it is not pulling outdoor air in.
Can children take TYGRON® during haze season?
TYGRON® is a functional food suitable from age 2. Adults aged 18 and above take 1 to 2 sachets a day, ages 7 to 18 take one sachet a day, and ages 2 to 6 take half a sachet a day. It is not suitable for children under 2. If a child has a persistent cough, breathing difficulty, or any symptom that worries you, see a doctor.
