The science of mushrooms, in service of the family.
Hi, I’m Boey. Twenty years ago, when I was 17, I decided I wanted to grow mushrooms. ORGANO™ is what those two decades have built: a wellness brand grounded in mushroom science, made for the families of Malaysia, Singapore, and beyond.
The path was medicine. I chose mushrooms instead.
In Form 5, I made a quiet decision that would define the next twenty years: I wanted to grow mushrooms.
The following year, I went into matriculation and earned a CGPA of 4.0 with full marks for co-curriculum. On paper, those results meant I could have applied for a full government scholarship to study medicine. I chose a different path.
I enrolled at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) for a Bachelor of Agricultural Science instead, and after graduation, I started growing mushrooms.
It wasn’t the safe choice, and it wasn’t the obvious one. But Tiger Milk Mushroom (虎乳芝 / Cendawan Susu Harimau) had been used by the indigenous communities of Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia for generations, and the science was barely scratching the surface of what those communities already knew. That’s where I wanted to be.
Alongside Tiger Milk Mushroom, Ling Zhi (灵芝 / Ganoderma sp.) was equally formative. Revered across East and Southeast Asian traditions for over two thousand years, its depth of scientific research and cultural significance in traditional medicine deepened my conviction: the mushroom kingdom held far more answers than modern science had yet thought to ask for.
Those words crystallised something for me. This wasn’t agriculture, and it wasn’t supplement manufacturing. It was something older and more purposeful than both.
Twenty years in mushrooms
What started as an undergraduate fascination became a career.
In 2020, I founded MycoPack, Malaysia’s specialist mushroom mycelium packaging brand, building green packaging materials and solutions out of mushroom mycelium as a sustainable alternative to plastic. By 2023, MycoPack reached commercial production. It’s still active today, alongside ORGANO™, under the Fungitech Group.
In parallel, I went deeper into formulation science, partnering with a professional formulator in Australia to study and research on the best Tiger Milk Mushroom product formulation. I invented the advanced TMM365+ cultivation method that earned Fungitech Sdn Bhd the Malaysia Book of Records for the highest 1,3/1,6 beta-glucan content in Tiger Milk Mushroom.
The work has also produced peer-reviewed papers in international journals (more on our research collaborations page).
ORGANO™ TYGRON™ is the product I built around all of that.
Recognition
The work hasn’t been mine alone, but the awards have been kind:
- Anugerah Pelajaran Diraja: Royal Education Award, presented by the Sultan of Selangor during my UPM convocation.
- Top Ten Outstanding Penang Youth (TOPY) 2024: recognising young Penangites who’ve made a difference in their field.
- British Publishing House: Successful People in Malaysia, international recognition for work that crossed borders.
On the global stage
Malaysian mushroom science has more to say to the world than it gets credit for. I’ve been honoured to share what we’re learning at:
- China International Mushroom Day 2025: invited speaker on Tiger Milk Mushroom commercialisation.
- The 1st Tremella Industry Development Conference (China, December 2024): invited speaker on functional mushroom science.
- Multiple invited talks across the Asia-Pacific mushroom science community.
Closer to home, our farm in Penang has hosted the Deputy Minister of Agriculture Malaysia, a recognition that the work we’re doing matters at the national level, not just the academic one.
