Haze protection essentials on a warm surface: a well-fitted N95 respirator, a HEPA air purifier and a houseplant

5 Common Haze Myths (and What Actually Protects You)

Table of Contents

The most dangerous thing about haze is not the grey sky. It is the handful of habits we trust to keep us safe that quietly do not. Staying indoors with the windows open, reaching for a surgical mask, leaving the rest to the air-conditioner: each feels sensible, and each still lets fine haze particles (PM2.5) reach your family's lungs. Below are the five haze myths Malaysian and Singaporean families believe most often, and what actually protects you. In short: seal the house and run a HEPA air purifier, wear a well-fitted N95 or KN95 outdoors, judge the air by the AQI reading and not by how the sky looks, and see the haze as everyone's problem, not just a concern for people with asthma.

Myth 1: "If we stay indoors, we are safe from the haze"

Staying indoors helps, but an ordinary home is not sealed. Fine PM2.5 particles slip through the gaps around windows and doors. Research on smoke events shows that with the windows shut and no air cleaner running, indoor fine-particle levels still sit at roughly half to two-thirds of the outdoor level. In other words, when the air outside is "unhealthy", the air in your living room is often not far behind.

What actually helps: close windows and doors, block the obvious gaps, and run a HEPA air purifier sized for the room. The United States Environmental Protection Agency notes that a portable HEPA cleaner can cut indoor fine particles by around half or more during a smoke event. If you only do one indoor thing during haze, make it this. For a room-by-room walkthrough, see our guide on indoor air quality at home during haze.

Myth 2: "Any face mask protects you from the haze"

A surgical or cloth mask is built to catch droplets, not the microscopic particles in haze. PM2.5 particles are about 2.5 micrometres across or smaller, small enough to slip around the loose edges of a surgical mask. That is why the mask you grab for a quick errand is not the mask that protects your lungs on a hazy day.

What actually helps: a well-fitted N95 or KN95 respirator, which is designed to seal against the face and filter about 95% of fine particles. Fit is everything. A gap at the nose or cheeks undoes the rating. Young children rarely get a good seal on adult-sized masks, so for little ones the priority is staying indoors with clean, filtered air rather than relying on a mask.

Myth 3: "My air-conditioner filters out the haze"

A standard split-unit air-conditioner cools and recirculates the air already in the room. Its filter is a dust screen, made to protect the unit and catch large lint, not to trap PM2.5. Running the aircon during haze can feel better because the room is cooler and the door stays shut, but the cooling is doing the comfort work, not cleaning the fine particles.

What actually helps: pair the aircon with a HEPA air purifier, keep the room closed so you are filtering the same air over and over, and service the unit so a clogged filter is not just pushing dust around. Our guide on how often to service your aircon in Malaysia covers the timing.

On a hazy day, closing the windows and running a HEPA air purifier is what genuinely cleans your indoor air.

Myth 4: "The haze only affects people with asthma"

People with asthma, sinus trouble or existing lung conditions do feel it first and hardest. But PM2.5 is small enough to travel deep into the lungs and into the bloodstream, which is why the World Health Organization regards fine particulate matter as a health risk for the whole population. Healthy adults get the scratchy throat and dry cough too. Young children breathe faster and take in more air for their size, older parents have less reserve, and pregnancy brings its own sensitivity.

What actually helps: approach haze as a household-wide issue, not a personal one. If you want the specifics for the most sensitive family members, see our guide on protecting children's lungs during haze.

Myth 5: "Once the sky clears or it rains, the air is safe"

Your eyes are a poor air-quality sensor. Haze can thin visibly while PM2.5 stays high, and a grey morning can be harmless mist when the reading is fine. Rain helps by washing some particles out, but the relief is often partial and short, and the haze can return within hours if the source has not changed.

What actually helps: check a real number. Malaysia's Air Pollutant Index (API) and the AQI reading tell you what your eyes cannot. Take "unhealthy" as unhealthy even on a bright-looking day, and remember a cough can outlast the haze itself, which we explain in why a cough can linger after the haze clears.

What actually protects your family (at a glance)

The belief What actually protects you
"Staying indoors is enough" Close up the house and run a HEPA air purifier
"Any mask will do" A well-fitted N95 or KN95 outdoors; keep young kids in filtered indoor air
"The aircon cleans the air" Aircon for comfort, HEPA purifier for the particles, and service the unit
"Only asthma sufferers are at risk" Protect the whole household, especially kids, elderly and pregnant members
"Clear sky means clean air" Check the API or AQI number, not the view, and stay careful after rain

Supporting your family's lungs, day to day

On a bad-AQI day, a good mask and a HEPA purifier do the heavy lifting. Those actions come first. Alongside them, many Malaysian families like to support their lungs from the inside with a simple daily routine. Tiger milk mushroom (Lignosus rhinocerus, or cendawan susu harimau) has been used in this region for generations for respiratory wellness, and it is the heritage ingredient behind TYGRON™.

Each TYGRON™ sachet carries 1,000 mg of tiger milk mushroom sclerotium in an 8-in-1 blend that also brings in botanicals like elderberry, astragalus, lion's mane and turmeric. ORGANO™ uses Herbosomal® patented liposomal encapsulation technology (patent number MY-188945-A) on the extract portion, so more of the active compound is protected on the way in. TYGRON™ also holds the Malaysia Book of Records certification for the highest 1,3/1,6 beta-glucan content in Malaysia. 1,3/1,6 beta-glucan is the most important active compound and quality benchmark in tiger milk mushroom, so a higher content signals greater potency and quality. It is a daily functional food for the whole family, ages 2 and above: adults take one to two sachets a day, ages 7 to 18 take one, and ages 2 to 6 take half. It tastes like Ribena, so children actually ask for it.

    Frequently asked questions

Does staying indoors protect you from the haze?

Partly. With windows and doors closed, indoor fine-particle levels are usually lower than outdoors, but they can still reach around half of the outdoor level without an air cleaner. Closing up the house and running a HEPA air purifier is what makes indoors genuinely safer.

What is the best mask for haze, N95 or surgical?

A well-fitted N95 or KN95 respirator. It seals against the face and filters about 95% of the fine PM2.5 particles in haze. A surgical or cloth mask is made for droplets and does not seal, so it lets fine haze particles slip around the edges.

Does an air-conditioner filter out the haze?

No. A standard air-conditioner cools and recirculates the air, and its filter catches dust rather than PM2.5. Use it for comfort, but add a HEPA air purifier for the fine particles and service the unit regularly.

Is the air safe once the haze clears or after it rains?

Not necessarily. Visibility is not the same as air quality, and rain often clears particles only partly and briefly. Check Malaysia's API or the AQI reading rather than judging by the sky.

Can tiger milk mushroom help your lungs during the haze?

Tiger milk mushroom has a long tradition of use for respiratory wellness in this region, and many families take it daily as a functional food. It is a daily wellness habit rather than a substitute for reducing exposure, wearing a proper mask, or seeing a doctor if a cough or breathlessness persists.
