Why Do I Have So Much Phlegm? Malaysia Guide
You have so much phlegm because your airways are making extra mucus to deal with something. The usual reasons are a cold or flu, haze or cigarette smoke, an allergy, or mucus running down from your nose. Most of the time it clears by itself. See a doctor if it lasts more than a couple of weeks, has blood in it, or comes with trouble breathing.
This guide is from ORGANO, an international natural wellness brand operated by Fungitech Australia Pty Ltd and Fungitech Sdn Bhd. TYGRON® is its daily tiger milk mushroom (Lignosus rhinocerus) functional food, formulated in Australia and manufactured in Malaysia.
What is phlegm, and is it bad for you?
Cleveland Clinic, in guidance updated in September 2024, puts it simply: "Phlegm is a type of mucus that you usually cough up from your lower respiratory tract." It is the thick, sticky stuff from your chest. Mucus has a real job: it traps things that could harm you and moves them out of your body.
The NHS page on catarrh (too much mucus in the nose or throat), reviewed in June 2026, is reassuring: "Although catarrh can be annoying, phlegm and mucus are not harmful and are the body's way of clearing infection."
Why do I have so much phlegm?
The NHS names infections, pollution, cigarette smoke and allergies among the causes. Cleveland Clinic adds long-term lung diseases. The clues below are our own plain guide, not theirs, and not a diagnosis.
| Reason | Clues | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Cold, flu or chest infection | Began with a sore throat, runny nose or fever | Rest and plenty of fluids |
| Haze or smoke | Comes on during hazy days | Less time outdoors, cleaner indoor air |
| Smoking | Phlegm most mornings, sometimes brown | Stopping, and a doctor's check |
| Allergy or dust mites | Sneezing, blocked nose, worse in the bedroom | Hot-washed bedding, a clean aircon filter |
| Mucus from the nose | Felt at the back of the throat, worst on waking | A pharmacy salt water nose rinse, sips of water |
| Long-term lung problem | Phlegm most days for months, or breathlessness | See a doctor |
If it sits in your throat more than your chest, read always clearing your throat. To work out what kind of cough you have, read dry cough versus phlegmy cough.
Why do haze and smoking make phlegm worse?
Because they irritate the airways. The US Environmental Protection Agency, on a wildfire smoke page updated in October 2026, says: "Fine particles are respiratory irritants, and exposures to high concentrations can lead to persistent coughing, phlegm, wheezing and difficulty breathing." It also says: "Although most healthy people will recover quickly from smoke exposure, some may experience health effects such as pulmonary inflammation and transient reductions in lung function". In plain words, the EPA says most healthy people get better fast, but some get swollen lungs that work less well for a while. Malaysia's Ministry of Health, on its InfoSihat haze page, lists an itchy throat and coughing among the effects of ongoing exposure. Haze carries the same kind of particles.
Smoking is the daily version. Malaysia's National Health and Morbidity Survey 2023 found 19.0 percent were current tobacco smokers. The World Health Organization says "Smoking and air pollution are the most common causes of COPD", a long-term lung disease that caused 3.4 million deaths worldwide in 2023, and in which "the lungs can get damaged or clogged with phlegm."
What can I do at home to clear phlegm?
- Drink plenty of water. Cleveland Clinic's rule of thumb is enough to make your urine pale.
- Gargle warm salt water. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, gargle, then spit it out. The NHS says children should not try this.
- Clean what you breathe. Keep aircon filters clean. A 2022 review in the Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology names house dust mites as a main airborne trigger in Malaysia and says routine washing and high-temperature drying of bed sheets is essential. More in dust mites in Malaysian bedrooms.
Ask a pharmacist before giving anything to a child: the NHS notes some cough medicines should not be given to children under 12.
When should I see a doctor about phlegm?
In Malaysia, doctors are told to look early. A 2014 paper in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care (PMC4209673) states: "In Malaysia, physicians are recommended to promptly identify the cause of a cough lasting more than 2 weeks, with pulmonary tuberculosis as a primary concern." The paper's main worry here is TB, a lung infection. That line is written for doctors. Our advice to you is the same as at the top of this page: phlegm that lasts more than a couple of weeks is worth a visit, even if you feel fine.
Do not wait if you have any of these:
- Blood in your phlegm, even small streaks.
- Chest pain, or trouble breathing.
- A cough quickly getting worse, or a swollen, painful neck.
- Weight loss you cannot explain, or a weak immune system.
- Very dark phlegm.
If you are struggling to breathe, call 999 in Malaysia or 995 in Singapore.
Where does a daily habit fit in?
After the checks above, not before them. For generations, Malaysian families have turned to tiger milk mushroom for respiratory wellness. The Malaysian Herbal Monograph records that Lignosus species have traditionally been used for coughs and colds, filed as folk use rather than clinical proof.
1,000 mg tiger milk mushroom sclerotium and 90 mg Vitamin C for immune support, in one elderberry sachet. Adults 1 to 2 sachets a day, ages 7 to 18 one sachet, ages 2 to 6 half a sachet. Not suitable under 2.

Why do I have so much phlegm in the morning?
Often because you have been lying flat all night. Lying down lets mucus pool at the back of the throat instead of draining. Why a cough gets worse at night explains more.
My child has a lot of phlegm. What should I do?
Give plenty of fluids and rest, and keep the room free of smoke. See a doctor promptly if your child is breathless, feeding poorly or getting worse, or if the cough has gone past a couple of weeks.
Can tiger milk mushroom help with phlegm?
Tiger milk mushroom has been used traditionally across Malaysia to soothe coughs and support the lungs, including coughs that come with phlegm, and that tradition is the heart of TYGRON®. Some customers have told us a daily routine helps them feel clearer. Because TYGRON® is categorised as a functional food by Malaysia's Ministry of Health, we cannot make any medical or health claims. Please see a doctor if phlegm lasts more than a couple of weeks, or if you ever see blood in it. If you have asthma or COPD, talk to your doctor first, and never stop or reduce a prescribed inhaler.
