Flu at School: Which Mask for Kids in Singapore?
Our short answer: in Singapore, a sick child stays home, and a mask does not change that. Schools do not make masks compulsory, so for a well child a mask is the family's choice. If your child is 6 or older and wants one, pick a child-size 3-ply mask that fits and stays on through a lesson. Children aged 5 and under do not need one, WHO and UNICEF say, in advice we explain below.
ORGANO is an international brand operated by Fungitech Australia Pty Ltd and Fungitech Sdn Bhd. We make TYGRON®, a daily tiger milk mushroom (Lignosus rhinocerus) functional food. Masks and school supplies are not what we sell.
Why does the January return matter in Singapore?
School pages show term 4 ending on 20 November 2026 for most schools (23 October for O-Level venues), with the break to 31 December. MOE says 2027 starts on 4 January for Primary 1 and Kindergarten 1, and on 5 January for Primary 2 to 6 and Kindergarten 2. Secondary schools also start on 4 January.
The Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA) says flu peaks here are typically seen in "May to August and December to March". On 1 September 2026, CDA said 36.6% of tested community samples from people with flu-like illness were flu in the week of 16 to 22 August, up from 24.0% the week before. Last year's peak was 43.9%, in January 2025. CDA adds that timing can shift with "international travel and population mixing patterns" (travel and people mixing), so a year-end trip and a full classroom are worth planning for.
Do schools in Singapore require masks?
No. MOE said in 2022 that "students and teachers now also have the option of unmasking indoors", and that those who prefer masks in school "may do so". We found no newer MOE rule changing this, though a school can ask otherwise. So follow its notice first.
Mask-wearing on public transport also stopped being required on 13 February 2023, as reported by Human Resources Online. That report says masks stayed for patients and visitors in healthcare settings, so bring one to the clinic if your child is 2 or older.
What should you do when your child is the sick one?
Keep your child home. CDA says people with mild symptoms "should stay at home until their symptoms resolve". If they need to go out, it asks them to minimise contact, wear a mask, and keep away from crowded places and people who get very sick easily. MOH wrote in 2019, in a reply about hand, foot and mouth disease in preschools, that it appeals "to parents whose children are unwell to keep them at home".
MOH's same reply lists "daily health and temperature checks of children upon arrival" and sick bays for children waiting to go home. So a mask is not a pass for a child with a fever or a bad cough. Our guide: if you have to leave home for the clinic, that is the time for the mask, if your child is 2 or older.
How strong is the evidence for school children?
Thin. Our PubMed search in October 2026 found no large trial testing masks on school children for confirmed flu.
- A Japanese survey. In Matsumoto, a 2016 report covered 10,524 children from 29 public elementary schools. The authors estimated masks helped by 8.6 percent overall, and vaccination by 9.9 percent. The mask figure was larger in grades 4 to 6 than in grades 1 to 3. This was a questionnaire, so it cannot prove the mask made the difference.
- The wider picture. WHO's April 2026 guideline pooled 12 community trials, mostly not about schools. Confirmed flu was 12 percent lower with masks, but "the evidence was insufficient to exclude chance".
Our reading: for a school child, expect a small help at best. Staying home when sick and the yearly vaccine carry more of the weight.
Which mask suits which age?
The WHO and UNICEF column is COVID-19 advice, the closest age guide we found. The last column is our guide for flu.
| Age | WHO and UNICEF | Our guide at school |
|---|---|---|
| Under 2 | Not needed | No mask. |
| 2 to 5 | "do not need to wear a mask" | Skip it in class. For a clinic visit, only with an adult close by. CDC allows masks from age 2. |
| 6 to 11 | Well-fitted mask where air is poor or children sit close, when COVID-19 is spreading | Child-size 3-ply, if your child is willing and can manage it alone. |
| 12 and older | Same advice as adults | Regular or small 3-ply, whichever seals around the nose and chin. |
Other types do not suit school. CDC says N95s do not come in sizes for very young children, and an N95 only works when sealed. WHO calls cloth masks "less effective compared to medical masks". Skip valves too: CDC says a valve lets air out, so it may not protect others as well.
WHO and UNICEF also say: "No child should be denied access to school or activities because of lack of a mask."
What goes in the school bag?
- Two spares in a clean zip bag. WHO's 2023 advice says "Medical masks are for single use only", and to replace one "if it gets soiled or damp".
- A plan for recess. Our guide: mask off to eat, into the bin, clean hands, new mask after.
- No mask for PE. WHO and UNICEF say children do not need one for running, jumping or playing, "as it may affect their breathing".
- A word with student care. Our guide: tell the centre too.
- Practice at home. Try it over the holidays first. Pinch the metal strip to the nose, and cover nose, mouth and chin. CDC: "Check for gaps by cupping your hands around the outside edges of the mask."
Our guide: never put a mask on a sleeping child, or on a child who cannot pull it off alone.
What if you are coming back from a holiday trip?
CDA's flu page, which points travellers to its fuller advice, lists "Wearing a mask and seeking medical attention promptly when unwell".
- Check the vaccine early. MOH expected the 2026 to 2027 vaccine from early to mid-October 2026. It lists "children aged six months to under five years" among those at higher risk. CDA says appointments can be booked at vaccine.gov.sg/flu or polyclinics. An archived CDC page says the body's response takes about 2 weeks, so our guide is at least 2 weeks before you fly, and by mid-December for a 4 January start. CDC says some children aged 6 months to 8 years need two doses at least 4 weeks apart, including first-timers, so start earlier. Ask your doctor what suits your child.
- Pack masks for the flight. Our guide: carry the same child-size mask for a crowded airport, if your child is 6 or older.
- Be honest on the first morning. Our guide: a cough or fever on 4 January means a clinic visit, and home until symptoms clear. Tell the school.
If haze is back at the same time, the answer changes. See our haze mask guide, written for Malaysia. Why colds and flu spread when term starts is covered in our back-to-school guide, written for Malaysia.
When should your child see a doctor?
Our guide: see a doctor for a fever that will not settle, a cough over 3 weeks, or coughing up blood. CDC's urgent signs include trouble breathing, bluish lips, chest pain, seizures, or a child who is not alert, and any fever under 12 weeks old. Take any mask off and call 995, SCDF's emergency line. Frequently asked questions
Must my child wear a mask to school in Singapore?
No. MOE said in 2022 that students have the option of unmasking indoors, and that those who prefer a mask may keep it on. We found no newer MOE rule changing this. Follow any notice from your child's school.
Can my child go to school with a cough if wearing a mask?
Our guide: no. CDA says people with mild symptoms should stay at home until their symptoms resolve. Keep your child home and tell the school. If your child struggles to breathe, take the mask off and call 995.
How many masks should my child bring to school?
Our guide: one on and two spares in a clean zip bag. WHO's 2023 advice says medical masks are for single use only. Change after recess, and any time the mask gets damp or dirty.
Where does a daily habit fit in?
Separately. Everything above is for the days your child is out among people, and a daily routine is for the ordinary weeks. It changes none of that advice. The Malaysian Herbal Monograph records the traditional use of Lignosus.
1,000 mg of tiger milk mushroom sclerotium and 90 mg of Vitamin C in every elderberry sachet. Adults 1 to 2 sachets a day, ages 7 to 18 one sachet, ages 2 to 6 half a sachet. Not suitable under 2.
