Tiger milk mushroom, known in Malaysia as Cendawan Susu Harimau and in Mandarin as 虎乳芝 (hǔ rǔ zhī), has been prized for generations by Malaysia's Orang Asli communities. It was first described scientifically by the mycologist Mordecai Cooke in 1879, from a specimen collected in Penang. Long before it became the subject of peer-reviewed mycology, it was the mushroom Orang Asli families turned to when a cough wouldn't go away or breathing felt heavy.
Where the name comes from
The story passed down: a tigress nursing her cubs would lose drops of milk to the rainforest floor. Where her milk fell, this mushroom would grow. That's the legend. The botany is humbler. The mushroom is Lignosus rhinocerus, growing primarily on undisturbed forest floor in Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak, Sabah, and parts of Indonesia. The valuable part is the sclerotium, the dense underground tuber where active compounds concentrate.
How it was traditionally used
Indigenous communities boiled small pieces of the dried sclerotium in water. The decoction was used for breathing support, easing coughing, and strengthening the lungs: traditional uses recognised under Malaysia's NPRA framework as historical and ethnobotanical claims.
