Sclerotium vs Mycelium: Why the Part of the Mushroom Matters More Than the Brand

You can buy ten different tiger milk mushroom products in any Malaysian pharmacy. They all promise the same thing. The pricing tells you nothing about quality: some of the cheapest are mycelium, some of the most expensive are still mycelium. To buy intelligently, you need to know which part of the mushroom is in the box.

The mushroom isn't one thing, it's three

A tiger milk mushroom (Lignosus rhinocerus) has three distinct parts:

• Mycelium: the thread-like root network grown on grain or sawdust. Mostly starch, with a low concentration of the active compounds.
• Sclerotium: the dense underground tuber where the mushroom stores its energy and active compounds. This is what indigenous Malaysians have used for generations.
• Fruiting body: the above-ground mushroom that releases spores. Less concentrated in the actives than sclerotium for this species.

Why mycelium dominates the market

It's economics. Mycelium grows on grain in 6 to 9 weeks. Sclerotium takes a year or more to develop properly. Many manufacturers grow mycelium-on-grain, then grind the whole thing, mycelium plus residual grain, and label it as “tiger milk mushroom.” The label is technically true; the value is not.

Many mycelium-on-grain products are predominantly grain substrate rather than fungal material: the actual active content is a fraction of the labelled weight.

How to read a tiger milk mushroom label

Look for these signals on the back of the box:

• “Sclerotium” or “sclerotium extract” in the ingredient list: good.
• “Mycelium” or “mycelium powder”: cheap material; verify dose.
• “Tiger milk mushroom (whole mushroom)” with no part specified: ambiguous; usually means mycelium-on-grain.
• 1,3/1,6 beta-glucan content stated explicitly: a measurable potency marker. Higher is better.
• mg per serving of the actual sclerotium, not just total powder weight.

How can I tell if a product is mycelium-on-grain?
