Beta-Glucan Explained: What It Is, Why It Matters in Tiger Milk Mushroom, and How to Read the Number on the Box

What is beta-glucan, in plain English?

Beta-glucan is a type of long-chain sugar molecule (a polysaccharide) found in the cell walls of mushrooms, oats, barley, yeast, and seaweed. The specific kind found in tiger milk mushroom is the 1,3/1,6 beta-glucan family: the numbers refer to how the sugar molecules are linked together at the molecular level.

    Two key facts:

    • Beta-glucan is the most-studied bioactive compound in tiger milk mushroom.
    • Different sources have different beta-glucan structures. Oat beta-glucan and mushroom beta-glucan behave differently in the body, and the 1,3/1,6 form from mushrooms is the one with the most research support for immune-system interaction.

    Why is beta-glucan studied?

Researchers have studied 1,3/1,6 beta-glucan for its interaction with the human immune system, specifically with receptors on macrophages and other immune cells in the gut. This is an active area of peer-reviewed research.

Why beta-glucan content varies wildly between brands

Three reasons account for almost all the variance:

    1. Cultivation length

Sclerotium that has had more time to develop concentrates more beta-glucan. Industry-standard cultivation is 60 to 180 days. ORGANO™'s TMM365+ method takes more than 365 days per harvest. The slower cycle is the single biggest driver of higher beta-glucan content.

    2. Part of mushroom used

Sclerotium (the underground tuber) is dense in beta-glucan. Mycelium (the root network grown on grain) is mostly starch. A product made from mycelium-on-grain will measure low on beta-glucan even if the total powder weight is high.

    3. Extraction method

Sclerotium that is properly extracted holds significantly more measurable beta-glucan than raw powder.

How to read a beta-glucan claim on the box

A percentage on its own does not tell you how much beta-glucan you actually swallow. You have to multiply the percentage by the dose. The worked example below shows why a big percentage on a small dose can still deliver very little.

Stated percentage Daily dose Actual beta-glucan per dose
    30% 200 mg 60 mg
    30% 1,000 mg 300 mg
    1. Is the number per serving or per 100 g? Some brands list percentage of dry matter (for example, "30% beta-glucan") without anchoring it to your daily dose. A small 200 mg dose of 30% beta-glucan is only 60 mg of actual beta-glucan.
    2. Is it 1,3/1,6 specifically? Other beta-glucan structures exist; the 1,3/1,6 form is the one with most mushroom-specific research.
    3. Is the claim independently verified? A self-reported claim is one thing; an externally recognised claim, like the Malaysia Book of Records, which ORGANO™ holds for the highest 1,3/1,6 beta-glucan content in tiger milk mushroom in Malaysia, is another.

    What TYGRON™ delivers

    • 1,000 mg of tiger milk mushroom sclerotium per sachet, one of the highest single-sachet doses in Malaysia.
    • TMM365+ slow-grown sclerotium, cultivated over more than 365 days for higher beta-glucan density.
    • Malaysia Book of Records for the highest 1,3/1,6 beta-glucan content in tiger milk mushroom in Malaysia, held by ORGANO™. 1,3/1,6 beta-glucan is the most important active compound and quality benchmark in tiger milk mushroom: a higher content signals greater potency and quality.
    • Herbosomal®, a liposomal encapsulation technology that coats the extract so more survives the stomach intact.

    Beta-glucan in the broader formulation

TYGRON™ is designed as an 8-in-1 formulation, not a single-ingredient product. The tiger milk mushroom beta-glucan is the lead active. Around it: Lion's Mane fruiting body, Vitamin C, Acacia Fibre, Bacopa, Elderberry, Astragalus, Turmeric, each with its own evidence base.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a higher beta-glucan percentage always better?

Not on its own. A percentage only tells you the actual amount once you multiply it by the daily dose. A high percentage on a tiny dose can deliver less beta-glucan than a moderate percentage on a full 1,000 mg dose, so always check both numbers together.

What is the difference between sclerotium and mycelium beta-glucan?

Sclerotium, the underground tuber, is dense in beta-glucan. Mycelium, the root network grown on grain, is mostly starch, so a mycelium-on-grain product can measure low on beta-glucan even when the total powder weight looks high. TYGRON™ uses 100% sclerotium.

Is mushroom beta-glucan the same as the beta-glucan in oats?

No. Oat beta-glucan and mushroom beta-glucan have different structures and behave differently in the body. The 1,3/1,6 form from mushrooms is the one with the most research support for immune-system interaction.

Why does TYGRON™ cultivate for more than 365 days?

Sclerotium that has more time to develop concentrates more beta-glucan. The industry-standard cycle is 60 to 180 days; ORGANO™'s TMM365+ method takes more than 365 days per harvest, which is the single biggest driver of its higher beta-glucan content and its Malaysia Book of Records recognition.

    Breathe easier, every day
